The Three Questions of a Dying Man

Jack Valentine had everything a good life is supposed to be made of. The slick car. The hot apartment. The cool friends. A salary most people would envy. And underneath all of it, an ache that never left him. He hated his job, his money slipped away no matter how much he earned, and a relationship had just ended badly. From the outside, he looked like a man who had won. On the inside, he felt like a man who had misplaced something and couldn't remember what it was.

Then one ordinary Monday morning, a pickup truck changed his life. The crash threw him into a coma for about a week and broke both of his legs. The driver of the other truck died on the spot. Jack woke up in the critical care ward of Lakeview General Hospital, alive, confused, and lucky in a way he didn't yet understand.

In the bed beside him lay an old man, around seventy-five, with thick silver hair, brown sunspots on his skin, and the most startling blue eyes Jack had ever seen. His name was Cal Valentine, and he was dying. The cancer had spread to his lungs, his gut, his brain. He had been in that hospital for seven months. And he wanted to talk.

Cal told Jack the story of his life, and it was a story shaped like a warning. He had grown up dirt poor, raised by his mother alone, spending summers swimming and winters reading by the fire. A military academy scholarship pulled him out of poverty and into college, where on his very first day in a history class he fell in love at first sight with a golden-haired woman named Grace. He built a lumber business during a construction boom and made millions. And then the money did to him what money quietly does to many people. It swallowed him. He worked and worked and stopped showing up for the people who loved him. When the industry turned, he lost the whole fortune in a matter of weeks. Grace left, and she took their son, and Cal never saw either of them again. That, he said, was the greatest mistake of his life.
