The Power of Fun — summary
A crime scene at three in the morning
Catherine Price was nursing her newborn daughter at 3 a.m. when the moment hit her. She had been scrolling eBay for antique door hardware, mindlessly, the way most of us scroll something at 3 a.m. She looked up and saw her baby gazing at her face, lit by the cold blue glow of the phone. Her daughter's eyes were searching for her mother. Her mother's eyes had been on a brass doorknob from 1923.
Price calls that her crime scene. It became the seed of her first book, *How to Break Up With Your Phone*, which helped a lot of people loosen the grip of their devices. But once she had loosened her grip, she ran into a second problem nobody had warned her about. With her phone away, she had no idea what to do with herself. She sat on her couch on a quiet Saturday and could not think of a single offline activity that sounded appealing. The phone was no longer the problem. The hole the phone had been filling was the problem. Most of us are quietly living with the same hole, and we mistake the noise covering it for a life.
Then, in 2017, she signed up for an adult beginners' guitar class on a whim, and the hole started filling with something she eventually had a word for. She called it True Fun. *The Power of Fun* is her attempt to bottle that feeling so the rest of us can find it on purpose, not by accident.
This summary walks through three big questions the book answers. What is fun, really, and why is most of what we call fun a fake version of it? Why are so many adults running through their days feeling subtly dead inside? And how do you actually engineer more True Fun into a normal grown-up life with a job and a phone and obligations.
