The Way of the Superior Man
David Deida, 1997
A spiritual guide to mastering the challenges of women, work, and sexual desire.
Opening
A small group of men sit on cushions in a workshop room. Some are software founders. One is a divorced lawyer. One is a yoga teacher with a girlfriend who keeps complaining he is "checked out." David Deida walks in, mid forties, wiry, slightly sunburnt. He skips the warm up. He looks at them and asks one question. "What is the deepest gift you would give the world if you knew you would die in a year?"
Silence. Most of the men cannot answer. They have answers about their jobs, their marriages, their savings accounts. They do not have an answer about the gift. Deida lets the silence sit. Then he tells them this is exactly the problem. A man who cannot answer that question lives in a fog. He moves through his work without conviction. His woman feels the fog and tests him. His body feels the fog and gets sick. His soul feels the fog and goes quiet.
That scene, repeated thousands of times in Deida workshops between 1990 and 1997, is the seed of this book. The Way of the Superior Man is the manual Deida wrote for the men who came to those workshops and asked him to put it in writing. Not therapy. Not pickup. Not chest beating men's club material. Something stranger. A practical theology of masculine purpose, written in punchy two page chapters, with exercises a reader can do today.
The book has sold more than a million copies. It is passed around among founders, athletes, fathers in mid life, men in messy divorces, and men who suspect they are sleepwalking through their own lives. Tony Robbins has recommended it. So has Tim Ferriss. It is also one of the most polarizing self help books of the last thirty years. The framing is gendered. The language is direct. Some readers love it on the first page. Some readers throw it across the room by chapter eight. Both reactions are useful. Deida is not asking to be agreed with. He is asking the reader to feel what is true in his own body.
