The Wind and the Candle
Picture a candle on a windowsill. A gust blows through, and the candle gutters out. Now picture a bonfire in the same spot. The same wind hits it, and the bonfire roars higher. Same wind. Opposite outcome.
Most of what people call resilience — bouncing back, weathering the storm, staying the same after a shock — misses the more interesting category. Some things actually need the wind. Take the wind away and they wither.
Nassim Nicholas Taleb noticed that category had no name. Not in English, not in Greek, not in Russian, not in Brooklyn slang. So he coined one. Antifragile. Not fragile. Not robust. Not resilient. Something that gets stronger when you kick it.
That word does a lot of work in this book. It reframes how he thinks about your bones, your career, your portfolio, your country, and the way evolution has been quietly outperforming every think tank for three billion years.
The book sits in the middle of his five-volume Incerto, after Fooled by Randomness and The Black Swan. Those earlier books argued that we systematically misread luck and underestimate rare catastrophic events. Antifragile is the prescription that follows the diagnosis. If we live in a world full of shocks we cannot predict, then trying harder to predict them is a fool's errand. Better to structure life so the shocks help instead of hurt.

By the end of the book you have a position on bank bailouts, child rearing, weightlifting, whether to take a salary or freelance, how to invest, why you should probably stop reading the news, and whether Seneca was actually a Stoic or something stranger.
